After our coffee break we walked slowly down the street to Pattison Park and Ry began to sprint and shout with his characteristic, childish glee. "Oh, my God! look, a gazebo!" he shouted back in my direction. I slowed up, watching my baby boy caper about with happiness. As soon as I reached Ry, I grabbed for him and huddled close and absorbed warmth from his soft cuddliness. "Oh babe, I'm so cold", I muttered and smiled as he placed a soft yet deep kiss. After about a minute our tongues intertwined and battled as the kiss grew deeper yet. At that second, when passion was at its height, two girls rushed by and hissed "faggot" at us. I turned at them and flipped them the bird. “Just wait, faggots, you're going to get yours!”
"Lets go home" I said, “so we don't get into any more trouble with anyone.” Ry hastily agreed but also suggested we head to the police station to report what had happened to us. From their looks and tone of voice, we believed their threat was real enough. We started sprinting out of the old wooden gazebo and headed down Parker Boulevard towards the old police station, reaching it in a matter of minutes. We talked first to the secretary, an elderly white haired gentleman, who asked us first to state our names, and then kindly to please wait in the chief's office for him.
Finally the chief arrived and we seated ourselves in front of his desk. Ry explained that while he and I were at Pattison Park two girls came up to us and taunted us and threatened us. "Now boys, why would they have reason to do such a thing to y'all" questioned the burly, yet fair skinned man with a kindly voice. He had introduced himself as Police Chief James Metz. At this point I grew increasingly more nervous but slipped my hand on top of Ry's and kissed my darling's cheek. "Ah, so you boys are together are you? Well I'm perfectly all right with this: I myself am gay so I feel it is my duty to help you find these girls. I'm sure their threats were empty but I'll throw a bit of a scare into them."
We set off back to Pattison Park to hunt down the homophobic girls. "Where'd you see these girls, boys?" Chief Metz asked. "They were around the gazebo," I replied. "They were headed over there," Ry said, pointing down the walking path that circled around the park. Following the path, Ry and I examined every passing face. The one had narrow blue eyes; long, dirty, blonde hair. The other had round, brown eyes and red hair. We walked for half an hour without spotting them. "Maybe they left," I suggested. "I doubt they would've stuck around. They're obviously not here if we've been looking for them for a half hour.”
"Well boys thats all I can do for now, I guess, as he looked at his watch and realized how late the hour was approaching I'll see yah around sometime?" asked the chief pleasantly. "Sure thing," we both replied, grateful for the chief's attitude and pleasant demeanor. Then I informed him that we had to be home soon as it was near dinner time and our parents wouldn’t accept any excuse for us being late. We said our last good-byes and headed off down the road towards our home, the chief watching us and making sure we were safe… At that moment my life changed forever as an M-182 Armour Piercing round struck the ground near Ry. Thank God it only exploded harmless gravel close to us. "DOWN boys, get down now!" the chief yelled at us, hurriedly rushing from the safety of his police cruiser to aid his new friends and keep them safe.
I was suddenly heaving Ry downwards towards the ground and the crack of return fire was heard from the Smith &Wesson Chief's Special .38 calibre in our new friend's large, doughy hands. amidst the hail of fire the chief remained calm and collected while barking orders to the emergency dispatcher connected to him by his walkie talkie "Attention all units; Attention all units; we have a 5218" the chief barked into his walkie-talkie again. 5218, the code for a unidentified assailant, was only used in the most dire of circumstances. Immediately the scratchy voice of the Local 4 man SWAT team responded that he would be there in 12-18 minutes. While we waited more bullets screamed past until finally we heard the SWAT vans pull up and start to deploy and orders crackled over the handset...
"Alpha One, all set here ready for command sir" “Locate target and prepare to return fire.” The chief ordered grimly his main goal was to end the attack and make safe the city, no matter the cost in human life. The resounding gunshot nearly split my eardrums as I stood and watched the assailant fall to the ground... As we approached, a mix of horror and glee shot through us all... the assailant was Ry's father...the dastardly man was finally dead and he could no longer torment Ry. peace could finally enter his life for the first time knowing that for the first time that he was safe.
